Local insurance tip

Ohio allows Medical Payments (MedPay) coverage as an optional add-on. Since Ohio is an at-fault state, MedPay is a smart, low-cost way to ensure your own medical bills are covered immediately after an accident, regardless of who is eventually found liable.

What Every Ohio Driver Needs To Know

Why is Ohio car insurance so much cheaper than the national average?

Ohio benefits from a perfect storm of affordability: a massive number of competing insurance carriers, lower-than-average population density and a traditional Tort legal system. This competition forces insurers to keep rates low to win customers, making Ohio one of the top 10 most affordable states for drivers in 2026.

What are the minimum insurance requirements in Ohio for 2026?

Ohio law requires 25/50/25 coverage: $25,000 for bodily injury per person, $50,000 per accident and $25,000 for property damage. While these minimums are affordable, many Ohio drivers opt for 100/300/100 limits to ensure they are fully protected against the rising cost of modern vehicle repairs and medical inflation.

How does the Ohio Financial Responsibility law work?

Ohio does not require you to show proof of insurance to register a car, but you must sign a statement swearing you have it. If you are caught without coverage during a traffic stop or after a random computer check, the state will issue an FR Suspension, requiring you to file an SR-22 certificate for three to five years to keep your license.

Can I get a discount for taking a defensive driving course in Ohio?

Yes, Ohio law (R.C. 3937.33) requires insurance companies to provide a premium discount to drivers aged 60 and older who successfully complete a state-approved accident prevention course. Many insurers voluntarily extend similar Safe Driver discounts to younger residents who use telematics (tracking apps) to prove good driving habits.
